June 30, 7:30pm

Almost fifty years since The True Samaritan, one of Nigel Butterley's most frequently performed works, he has just completed another substantial work for the medium. Beni Avshalom has been commissioned by the Sydney Chamber Choir, who will give the first performance at St. James' Church, King Street, Sydney on Saturday 30 June at 7.30pm.

Central to the programme, to be conducted by Roland Peelman, are the famous settings of King David's lament over the death of his traitorous son Absalom, by Thomas Weelkes and Thomas Tomkins. Beni Avshalom draws on a vivid modern translation to tell briefly the dramatic story leading up to that event. David's lament, sung in Hebrew, provides a refrain, helping the transition from scene to scene as the story unfolds.
